Do Weight Gain Supplements Work?

Protein shakes, weight gainers and more. It’s all available to buy in most shops with thousands of brands to choose from. Lots of people ask me questions about them, lets clear up the top 3 I always get asked.
1. DO THEY WORK?
Of course they do, like most products, they all work properly if you know how to use them. The various weight gain supplements will increase your daily calorie intake making it easier to fit in those extra calories without stuffing your face with lots of meals. You wouldn't find a solid six pack in a shaker, so make sure you put in the work in the gym and not rely on the supplement itself, otherwise you will gain muscle size and not just fat as some of these drinks are very calorie heavy. At the end of the day, if you’re consuming more calories than you are burning them, you’ll put on weight. It’s as simple as this:

2. I'VE USED SUPPLEMENTS AND SEEN NO CHANGES?
There could be many reasons why someone has had no change whilst taking a weight gain supplement. Most weight gain supplements are NOT meal replacements, make sure you understand this. A weight gain shake is to give you more calories than the amount of food you should already be eating. This basically means if you’re not eating enough calories through food on a daily basis, all the supplement will do is give you the calories you need to maintain your current weight, not increase it! Look back on the diagram again to see how that makes sense. This is a common reason why people find their supplement ‘didn’t work’. As I said before, you have to be weight training regularly every week to really increase muscle size and make them extra calories count.

3. SHALL I USE SUPPLEMENTS?

If you're trying to get bigger then of course you should. Just make sure:

  1. You are eating the right amount of calories day to day and then add in a supplement  in-between meals, post workout & before bed to make sure it has the desired effect.
  2. Read the nutritional label on the supplement, see if it supports your goals. If you only want to gain 10 lbs or so, you don't need 1,200 calories in your shake!
  3. Make sure you train adequately! Whilst using shakes you will gain weight but if you don't train enough its not going to be in all the right places.
  4. Lastly, don’t rely on them! As I said they are NOT all meal replacements, so make sure your meals are set and you’re eating good foods whilst using the supplement.

I hope this helps some confusion. Any questions? Leave a comment! please Like, Share and Tweet this article!
