Have You Set SMART Goals for 2015?

As we now start a new year, no doubt most of us have reflected on what we have achieved or maybe not achieved last year. Some of us will just carry on and go with the flow, others will set out what they want for the new year, making sure they have goals to reach. Have you set your goals? Know what you want to achieve? If not, maybe you should.
Here's why...
Working within the fitness industry has proven to me why so many people fall off of their fitness goals. When you ask a lot of general fitness goers what they're goals are, some won't know, some will, but majority of the time if they do, it's not very specific. Just by changing the way you think about your goals and changing it into a SMART goal, you'll find the goals you set will definitely be achieved allowing you to progress each year, not settle in the same spot.

What is a SMART goal you ask? SMART stands for: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely. By using this template when setting your goals, it will become more of a plan than just an idea or imaginative thought. For example:

  • Trainer: "What are your goals for the new year"
  • Client: "To Lose some weight."

Doesn't seem very elaborative, specific or have much substance, making it hard to stick to anything. On the other hand using the SMART principles:

  • Trainer: "What Are your goals for the new year?"
  • Client: "Well I want to lose 10lbs in total, ideally I'd like to drop 1-2 pounds a week and want to achieve this by the end of February as I have a wedding."

Not very difficult, hard or long winded, just takes a little more time to think about but straight away you've given yourself a specific amount, a measurable time, realistic approach and a time frame. So instead of just wanting to lose weight, you would now know when you want it and how you're going to get it. You'll find this more motivating as you have set yourself a SMART goal with a time frame. If you were to use this simple technique on any goal but especially your fitness goals, the results you see will most probably be greater than if you  didn't set the goal out this way.

Even if you wasn't to achieve the SMART goal you set, re evaluate the structure, tweak a few things, increase the time frame, reduce the amount of weight, whatever it needs for it to become more realistic for you! With hard work and consistency, no doubt you will achieve these goals and maybe achieve more than you initially anticipated.

Reach your full potential, don't limit yourself, push the boundaries and better yourself!
